Middlesbrough signing Kilgallon aims to prove himself to Sunderland boss Bruce

Sunderland defender Matthew Kilgallon is happy with his loan move to Middlesbrough.

Kilgallon has a point to prove to Sunderland boss Steve Bruce after making just six Premier League starts following his £2million switch from Sheffield United in January.

He said: "I signed at a bad time when Sunderland were struggling.

"It would have been nice to play a few more games because I still believe I'm good enough at that level.

"I thought I did well when I got a chance last season but It wasn't good to see the manager bring in all those defenders over the summer. It just never happened for me there so I was keen to come out on loan.

"It was a case of sitting on the bench there all season or coming here to play at a club that's capable of getting into the Premier League."
