Middlesbrough shake hands on Afonso Alves signing

Middlesbrough are confident of completing the signing of Afonso Alves this month.

The Evening Gazette says Boro have shaken hands on a deal with Heerenveen striker Afonso Alves.

But now they don't know which club they will be trying to sign him from.

The Dutch FA will rule tonight whether claims by Heerenveen's rivals AZ Alkmaar are genuine that they had a binding pre-agreement with Alves to join them on January 1.

If the Dutch FA (KNVB) rule in AZ's favour, then they could insist that Heerenveen reach an agreement to sell Alves to AZ!

And, as Alves now has no intentions of extending his career in Holland any further than January 31, Boro will have to open transfer negotiations all over again with AZ.
