Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate believes he has found the next Stewart Downing in 21-year old Adam Johnson.

Southgate believes that if Downing does make the move to Tottenham which has been reported, he has the perfect replacement.

"He is doing okay. He has been in the team the last few weeks, we have played both of them (Johnson and Downing) in a couple of games," Southgate said.

"We are pleased with Adam. We know he's a talent.

"We know he is three years behind Stewart in terms of his development physically and in terms of experience, but he is an exciting talent, there is no question about that, and somebody we feel has a big future with us."
