Middlesbrough insist Gaizka Mendieta has no future on Teesside.
Mendieta commented on Thursday that he was committed to helping the team and wanted the chance to show his best form.
However, Middlesbrough have now explained that the Spaniard is fully aware of where he stands at The Riverside.
He no longer figures in Gareth Southgate's plans and the club are working with him to secure the possible move from Teesside.
"We were amazed to read Gaizka's comments, as the club's chief executive Keith Lamb has held numerous talks with Gaizka, his agents and lawyers over an exit strategy for him," said a Middlesbrough spokesman.
"These negotiations have continued over a number of weeks.
"We thank Gaizka for his achievements in the past, but he has been told that he now has no future with Middlesbrough.
"We have been doing all we can to help Gaizka find another club and will continue to do so, but there is no chance of him gaining a place in the Middlesbrough squad."
