Middlesbrough chief Keith Lamb admits today's FA Cup tie with Everton is no priority as they battle to stay in the Premier League.
He said: "It's just another cup tie. What is far more important to me is winning Premier League matches to stay in the league. It is getting harder for a club of our size just to compete to survive in this league.
"It's been a hard season. But we've learned from our mistakes and there is everything still to play for, especially in the league."
Middlesbrough have dramatically reduced their wage bill since Southgate took over in the summer of 2006 and Lamb added: "It is preferable that we retain our position in the Premier League, but it is not a God-given right.
"We will do everything we can not to be relegated but if we are, we will take it on the chin and move on. Of course we can survive a year outside of the Premier League. The club has been around for 130-odd years.
"But relegation is not something we are contemplating. We are concentrating on the FA Cup quarter-final on Sunday - and then 10 Cup finals in the league."
