Middlesbrough chairman promises fans exciting arrivals

Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson has promised fans some exciting moves in the transfer market this summer.

Gibson, the man who brought the likes of Juninho, Fabrizio Ravanelli, Paul Gascoigne and Jonathan Woodgate to the Riverside Stadium, is determined to make a splash again as he attempts to replace striker Mark Viduka and build a side capable of challenging for the top six in the Barclays Premiership.

Asked if the club are targeting players who will excite the fans, Gibson said: "We are. We have some big targets.

"Obviously, we need one striker, preferably two, we need somebody on the right, we would like another midfield player and we are looking hard at the right-back situation.

"Gareth has his targets. We have very quietly built up our recruitment department at the club and we have more knowledge within the club of players globally than we have perhaps ever had before.

"It is how you use that knowledge, and therein lies the challenge. It is no more difficult for us than it is for our peers in football to attract players.

"We are on a virtually level playing field once you get outside the big-hitters.

"Those clubs can only take so many players, and then we have got to fight our corner and make sure we deliver the players we want."
