Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate is chasing Charlton Athletic fullback Luke Young.

The Teessiders wanted AZ Alkmaar's Gretar Steinsson but have been put off by the £4million tag.

So instead they are now monitoring England man Young, 28.

Addicks boss Alan Pardew admitted: "We've had a few phone calls about Luke. I've got a lot of time and respect for Luke and I appreciate he wants to play in the Premier League.

"There is no bad feeling and he's not being difficult. If a decent club comes in and I thought the fee was right I'd let him go."
