Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate is determined to land Newcastle United striker Alan Smith.

The Mail on Sunday says Southgate will persist with his efforts to swap Mido for Smith despite the Newcastle forward's anger at the proposed deal.

With Mido desperate to leave, Southgate will try to persuade Smith to accept he has no future at St James' Park and should join another relegation battle just down the road.

Southgate believes Smith's versatility and dressing-room presence could galvanise his small, young squad after their poor run of results.
