Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate isn't being blamed over the signing of £12 million striker Afonso Alves.

The People says Boro chairman Steve Gibson knows that the disastrous £12million signing of Brazilian striker Alves was not made on the recommendation of the manager.

Gibson and chief executive Keith Lamb pursued the deal to bring the flop from Heerenveen last year.
