Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate will seek to pick up Stewart Downing after the winger was axed from Fabio Capello's England squad.

Southgate said: "I don't know how many times I have to say it but I just don't think he realises how good he can be.

"Again he had to recover from a disappointment the night before a game after being left out of the squad.

"To cope with that and go out and play and nearly score the winner says it all. He is great to work with.

"He is exactly the sort of character we want to build up the club around. I still believe that he wants to be part of that."
