Middlesbrough boss Southgate: I never doubted Alves

Gareth Southgate says he was always confident Afonso Alves would score goals for Middlesbrough.

The Boro boss said: "From his, the team's and the fans' point of view, we'd been waiting for lift-off I suppose.

"I felt when he came on at Chelsea he was bright. It's the first time we'd created chances for him and we did it again on Sunday.

"What we have seen from him on the training ground is that he is a finisher and an excellent finisher.

"It didn't bother me that he missed chances at Stamford Bridge because I know he is the type of character with the sort of temperament that wants to keep getting in those areas and his finishes on Sunday were outstanding.

"He has given everybody a glimpse of what he is capable of. I still think it's a settling-in period for him, but he was fantastic against United, the two goals were brilliant."
