Middlesbrough boss Southgate: Friends must rally round Gazza

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate says troubled former star Paul Gascoigne needs his friends to rally round him.

Southgate played with Gazza for England in the 1990s. And he said: "It's a sad situation but I'm sure he'll come through it.

"I hope he's got people with him that'll help. Our thoughts are with him. He's the most talented player I played with, he was incredible with England.

"He'd do anything for anybody and, hopefully, people will do the same for him now because he's loved."

Meanwhile, Wigan boss Steve Bruce said: "I know Paul well. We've had many a night out.

"Like everyone, I'm saddened and shocked.

"We all hope he is in the best hands and hope he can come through this major obstacle.

"He has come through before but he will need the support of everyone around him and let's hope he is OK."
