Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate is excited about the prospect of signing Tottenham striker Mido.

"I don't like to say too much until the ink is dry on the contract but Mido will bring different attributes to our squad," he said.

"He's an experienced player and he will add more quality and increase our attacking options.

"However we know that he will be lacking in match-fitness because he has not taken part in Tottenham's pre-season matches.

"So the first thing we will do is assess him, and then we will take it from there."

Southgate added: "All the talks have been very positive and I don't see the medical being too much of a problem for him.

"We won't take the risk of putting him in too early considering his lack of football, but we are a little short on numbers at the moment and the sooner he is ready the better."
