Middlesbrough boss Southgate: Emnes project signing

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate admits he signed Marvin Emnes in the summer as a "project player".

Emnes struck in the FA Cup win over Wolves and Southgate said: "I haven't bothered to tell Emnes about the glamour and magic of the FA Cup, I just throw people out there and let them get on with it! The lads talk about it in the dressing room and most of the foreign boys are aware of the FA Cup anyway.

"There have been several Dutch players involved in semis and finals, so they know the value of the competition in our country.

"We signed him from Sparta Rotterdam last summer as a project, really. Marvin has done well in the reserves but it has been difficult for us to give him a run in the first team because we're in a difficult position.

"He has been on the bench more often than not because he's still learning the game. When you're having a run of results against you, you put the onus on the senior players to produce.

"He needs experience. The only way to gain it is to go through games like today's where they have to respond in a hostile atmosphere and under a fair bit of pressure."
