Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka has backed Gareth Southgate to be handed the England job on a permanent basis.
Southgate was appointed England manager on as caretaker following the unceremonious exit of Sam Allardyce a couple of months ago and it has to be said that the 46-year-old has done a decent job at the helm so far.
Many have gone on to urge the FA to hand Southgate the job permanently and now Boro boss Karanka has also lent his support to the Teesside legend.
Karanka told the Daily Telegraph: "I am really pleased with Gareth in charge. He was our captain, our manager [at Middlesbrough]. I had a really good relationship with him when he was [England] Under-21 manager, we had [Ben] Gibson, [Nathaniel] Chalobah, [Patrick] Bamford. We were always in touch.
"It's the right step. It's not about Gareth. If he loses two games in a row, it is not his fault; so it's build something strong. England can do it.
"I lived in the Spanish national team [as part of the federation's coaching set-up] – he is strong, he has experience, was a captain, managed in the Premier League, he knows how to work in the national set-up. I hope he will be successful. I will be happy if he can do it."
