Middlesbrough boss happy with O'Neil debut

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate was pleased with Gary O'Neil's debut in Saturday's defeat at West Ham.

O'Neil made his first appearance for the club when coming on as a second half substitute and the former Pompey player made an immediate impression.

Southgate said: "Gary didn't have too much time to show what he can do but I thought he did well.

"He seemed to settle into the side very quickly, which is what you would expect from a player with his Premier League experience.

"Gary initially came on the right but then he switched with Stewart Downing for the last 15 minutes because Stewart felt he could make a bigger impact by cutting inside from the right hand side."
