Middlesbrough have moved for Manchester United striker Alan Smith.
The Evening Gazette says Gareth Southgate has tested the water by asking Manchester United about the England striker's availability.
It is believed that United will make Smith available at the right price. Boro will have to pay a fee of around £6m for the 26-year-old if they are to be given the green light to open talks.
