Chivu completed a protracted move to Inter Milan earlier this summer and Mexes insists: "For me, we have lost a great player and a great friend, but we have gained an important signing like Juan, who has great qualities.

"At this moment he is injured, he has a small problem, but there are also other players in his role."

Mexes signed a new contract with Roma earlier this year and he added: "Above all it was a sport choice, inasmuch as I am very happy with my teammates, the club and the trainer. The choice to extend the contract and to remain with Roma I had already made well before I signed. With my family, we find ourselves very happy here. I'm content, indeed very happy."
