Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen is surprised they failed to buy a centre-half in the summer.
United were the biggest Premier League spenders of the summer, splashing out almost £150million on new players including a British record £59.7m on Angel Di Maria, but their failure to bring in a new centre-back has puzzled former first-team coach, Meulensteen.
"Yeah [I'm surprised they didn't sign a new centre-back]. It's been well documented on TV and in newspapers about them needing one," he told talkSPORT.
"Everybody expected they would go for a big, strong central defender and another strong midfielder."
