Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen feels the old reserve competition was good for youth development.
Meulensteen, at Soccerex this week, was asked by TMW about whether Serie A should field reserve teams.
He told TMW: "I think it's very important to create a bridge between the first team and the youth team.
"It's a way to give younger players a chance to compete at a higher level and with respect to how they play with peers.
"The results from the reserves league are comforting because it produced many players: for example from Manchester United reserves were developed Gerard Piqué, Johnny Evans, Giuseppe Rossi.
"For those players, it was an important step."
