Christoph Metzelder offered no excuses after Real Madrid's thumping by Valencia last night.

"The team fell short and we must regroup to defend the white jersey in the remaining matches," said the Germany defender.

"We must fight to protect the image of the club and try in all the games that remain.

"It is not an easy situation but we must be professional and win the games with dignity. This season has been a failure."

Metzelder was also asked about his own future and added: "I want to stay and play for the best team in the world."
