Merson: This is why Arsenal have no leaders...

Paul Merson has put the blame on manager Arsene Wenger for Arsenal's lack of leaders in the current team.

Despite playing well in the first half against Bayern Munich on Wednesday night, Arsenal completely capitulated in the second period to eventually lose 5-1 and many have blamed the Gunners' weak mentality for the dramatic collapse.

Merson was among the many who was left very unimpressed with Arsenal's lack of fight during the clash against Bayern and now the ex-Gunners star has blasted Wenger for not bringing in any leaders to the Emirates Stadium who could question his ways.

Merson told the Daily Star: "It's a great club and they treat you well. Too well. It's too comfortable. Nobody ever questions the manager. In my day, it would have been carnage in the dressing room.

"But Arsenal don't have any leaders because Wenger doesn't buy them. He doesn't want people questioning him. It's shambolic.

"The players are not good enough. I keep hearing about how mentally strong they are. They're not. They're weak. And it's because of the manager.

"To win things you have got to be mentally strong. But they are just getting blown away. It's atrocious. I don't even think Bayern Munich are that good.

"They are going backwards, and if they don't finish in the top four this year that's Arsenal done. It could be years before they're challenging again."
