Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has slammed Tottenham's transfer policy.

Merson wrote in the Daily Star: "They had the money but didn't do anything - and now Jermain Defoe is out for three weeks.

"What a miss he will be. I think he's the best English centre-forward we have.

"He's quick, a natural goalscorer and he makes good runs. Emmanuel Adebayor is coming back from the African Nations Cup but he doesn't carry the same threat.

"How Spurs ended up with four players who all play behind the striker - and only one actual striker - I'll never know."
