Merson: Arsenal should be disappointed to lose to average Monaco

Paul Merson suggests Arsenal should be dissatisfied following their Champions League exit at the hands of Monaco.

The Gunners produced a 2-0 win in the Round of 16 second leg at the Stade Louis II on Tuesday night but were unable to breach the deficit they left for themselves in the 3-1 loss at home last month.

Arsene Wenger's men dropped out of Europe's premier club competition on away goals after it finished 3-3 on aggregate but former midfielder Merson felt it should have been a different story.

"When it was 2-1 in the first leg, instead of shutting up shop and putting it down to one of them days, the fans started shouting 'attack, attack, attack'," Merson told Sky Sports News HQ.

"When you look at it now, they are not a very good team, Monaco, and Arsenal will be disappointed.

"Arsenal lost it in the first leg.

"No disrespect to Monaco, but we can see they are not a very good team.

"Whoever gets them in the next round will be pleased."
