Ernie Merrick's position as coach of Melbourne Victory is in doubt after news emerged that a rival coach is in the frame. Recent reports suggest that Victory officials are in pursuit of Brisbane Roar coach Ange Postecoglou to take the reins in Melbourne next season.
Whispers in Melbourne indicate that Merrick, who has led the Victory to two Championship/Premiership doubles in his six years at the club, was almost at the end of his reign and the club was looking at bringing in Postecoglou.
The former South Melbourne coach has had a fantastic season in charge of the Roar, leading them into the A-League Grand Final this Sunday with a 27-match unbeaten run and turning them into the most dominant team in the history of the competition.
Merrick is still overseeing the Victory who are at the beginning of their Asian Champions League campaign and at this stage will be the head coach of the club for the 2011/12 A-League season but the rumours are certainly out there.
