Gaizka Mendieta refuses to give up on his Middlesbrough career.

With Gary O'Neil and Mohammed Shawky having joined the battle for regular first team places at the Riverside, Mendieta's cause looks a forlorn one.

But he seems determined to honour the final year of his contract.

Not that Mendieta is an unpopular figure.

Tony McMahon said: "Mendi is a terrific professional. I have the greatest respect for him.

"Mendi has played big games for big clubs. His attitude is very good. Every day he wants to win. He doesn't know where his future lies, but he trains as hard as anyone. All credit to him."
