Olof Mellberg has defended delays over penning a new contract with Aston Villa.
Mellberg said: "We have had good talks and everything but we are going to leave it for a bit. We are obviously chatting all the time, so I am sure we will get back to it."
Mellberg has been a popular figure with supporters ever since his transfer from Spain and he hopes his current impasse does not come between him and the fans.
"I hope no-one can fault my loyalty through this," he said. "It is all about showing what you are about on the pitch with your performances and your attitude.
"I have always given 100 per cent for Villa. I have played almost every game, every season and been really happy.
"They have been the best footballing years of my career. Santander were a good side then we got relegated the last season I was there, so it was great coming to Villa.
"They had had an interest for quite a long time, so there was never any doubt in my mind about playing for them and there hasn't been for all these years.
"It has been great and hopefully the fans feel the same."
