Mellberg backs Villa pal Agbonlahor for England success

Aston Villa defender Olof Mellberg says teammate Gabby Agbonlahor has the potential to be a future England star.

The Swedish international said: "I think Gabby is doing really well already. He can play in different positions and has done well for us in both of those roles, out wide and also up front.

"When he came through the ranks and started training with the first-team squad, he had that raw pace - and that was his main asset.

"Now he has improved a lot in just over a year or so. He has a much better touch on the ball and a lot of other aspects have improved.

He is doing really well for us already and hopefully he can improve even more."

Mellberg added: "Can Gabby make the England step up? I think so. It is tough to get into the England side. It is one of the best in the world but he has the potential to do that.

"He has improved over the last couple of years and if he can keep that going, I am sure he will get chances.

"It is difficult for me to compare him with everyone else. If I said Gabby should definitely play for England, it would be disrespectful to someone else who I probably don't know as well as Gabby.

"But I can definitely see Gabby performing internationally as well. He has got a lot of talent in a lot of ways."
