Melbourne Victory to welcome back Thompson for derby

Archie Thompson is set to boost the Melbourne Victory ahead of Saturday's derby with the Heart. The A-League's all-time leading scorer is expected to be a surprise return to the line-up after missing five matches with a hamstring injury according to midfielder Grant Brebner.

"Archie could be a surprise packet, (but) I don't know (for sure)," Brebner said.

"He's locked away in the gym doing sessions, hopefully this week he'll get out and have a bit of a kick with us."

Thompson was returning to top form prior to his injury, which was sustained whilst trying to avoid Perth Glory keeper Tando Velaphi after he scored on December 18, but unfortunately strained a hamstring and has been out ever since.

But recent reports suggest that the speedy striker may be back for the third derby which promises to be an enormous clash as both the Victory and Heart need a win to keep their finals hopes rolling along.

The match takes place at Etihad Stadium this Saturday night.
