Melbourne Victory striker Thompson may have career-ending injury

There are fears Melbourne Victory's veteran striker Archie Thompson may have sustained a career-ending knee injury in the A-League Champions' 3-1 FFA Cup win over Adelaide United on Tuesday.

Melbourne newspaper The Age is reporting the 36-year-old former Socceroo may have ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee during the dying stages of the clash with the Reds.

Thomspon, who has made 210 A-League appearances for the Victory, scoring 89 goals, has one year remaining on his deal at AAMI Park.

Speaking to reporters after the match, Victory head coach Kevin Muscat refused to be drawn on the extent of the injury.

"Everything else is irrelevant at this point in time. He's in a great deal of pain, but it's too early to make any assumptions. We'll have to get him looked at," Muscat said.

"I'd hate to try and label what it is. It's not great, it's obviously his knee, but to try and assess what it is at this point in time is very, very difficult.

"I am positive. Hopefully we will get a positive result. I don't want to get drawn into hypotheticals. While there is some hope we will get some good news, I cling to that.

"He came on and he showed why we wanted to keep him in the club, the timing of his run, his awareness of the ball."
