Melbourne Victory star Thompson was close to Thailand move - Stubbins

Former Adelaide United assistant Phil Stubbins has revealed he was extremely close to bringing Melbourne Victory's Archie Thompson to Thailand.

Stubbins is the head coach of Thai Premier League club INSEE Police United and was hoping to sign the Australian international striker although insurance issues bungled the deal at the last minute.

"We nearly pulled off bringing Archie Thompson to the club and it was heartbreaking to miss out on him," Stubbins, who last week signed ex-Adelaide and Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Paul Reid, told au.fourfourtwo.com from Bangkok.

"He, like Paul Reid, would have been brilliant for us and I want to thank Archie and the club for helping to try and make it happen.

"Unfortunately, insurance killed off the deal and it never eventuated."
