Melbourne Victory have had a major coup with the re-signing of star striker Archie Thompson on a new three-year deal. The 32-year old has committed his future to the club where he has enjoyed so much success since the A-League's inception in 2005.
Thompson, the A-League's all-time leading goalscorer, is currently on the comeback trail from a serious knee injury but should be back in action for the Victory in the next week or so and was elated to have penned a new deal with his beloved club.
"I've been here since day one and have enjoyed some success here and it's been a long haul for myself in the last few months but I have to say thanks to the football club and the medical staff as well as friends and family for helping me through it," he said.
When asked if this would be his last contract, Thompson was confident he could still go on for a few more seasons after the initial deal.
"I think I've still got a few good years left in me after that. If I do everything right I can see myself playing for a while yet."
Victory football operations manager Gary Cole was delighted to announce Thompson's new contract.
"We have re-signed Archie Thompson on a three-year deal as our Australian marquee player. It's fantastic news for the club and fantastic news for Archie," Cole said.
"He's been an integral part of our football club from day one. He had a brief sojourn to Holland for a little while but since he's been back, he's won two Premierships and two Championships.
"He's been a fantastic player for the A-League, consistently scoring goals week in week out and we can't wait for him to get back into this team."
