Melbourne Victory midfielder Grant Brebner has revealed his decision to place a bet against his club is one he firmly regrets. The Scottish star was found to have placed bets in games his team was involved in although he was unavailable himself due to injury.
Yesterday, Brebner apologised to teammates and officials prior to training and the club also released a statement prepared by the 31-year old.
"Some of you are aware of my past and the problems I have with gambling," Brebner read from the statement.
"While I've stayed on top of it for some time, I have had a regrettable lapse.
"I'm going to get further help. I have let a lot of people down, including my family and I have to live with that.
"The biggest mistake of my career has me sitting here today and I'm committed to taking a more proactive approach to beating this problem.
"This is an incredibly difficult time for me (and) it is a personal problem that I am tackling."
Brebner has been banned for four matches and was lumped with a $5000 fine.
