Melbourne Victory chairman Geoff Lord has approached the Australian Football League about having an Aussie rules club in North Queensland.
Lord is leading a push to take the AFL to Townsville or Cairns and obtain the 19th or 20th licence to the league following the inclusion of Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney.
The AFL's game development boss David Matthews said that there had been talks with Lord and his business partner John Pryce and admitted that it was definitely a prospect with potential.
''We're open to all possibilities,'' Matthews told The Age. ''But we wouldn't consider anything without the support of the local affiliates and community football. It's still very much in the discussion stage.''
