Melbourne Victory to appeal Allsopp red card

Melbourne Victory have confirmed they will launch an appeal over the red card received by Danny Allsopp in Saturday night's A-League grand final.

The striker was sent off in the 64th minute for an alleged head butt on Adelaide United defender Robert Cornthwaite but both the player in question and his coach Ernie Merrick are furious over the decision.

"We are going to sort out what happened and I feel I have to clear my name," said Allsopp.

"We will definitely see what avenues are available to us now to see where we go from here but at the moment I am just enjoying the fact we have got the (championship) trophy."

Merrick said Allsopp's reputation had been tarnished and said the club would act to clear his name.

"We are not worried about him missing games, we are worried about his reputation and he is bitterly disappointed by it," he said.

"He is extremely disappointed about his reputation being sullied because he was sent off and no one knows yet why he was sent off.

"We have reviewed the footage and we will certainly be appealing because Danny Allsopp is not that kind of player."
