Melbourne's Thompson out for about nine months

Melbourne Victory striker Archie Thompson has been ruled out for the remainder of 2010 with a serious knee injury.

The speedy forward was injured in Saturday night's A-League Grand Final in a challenge with Sydney FC defender Simon Colosimo with scans revealing a ruptured anterior cruciate and medial ligaments in his left knee.

The Victory confirmed Thompson would be out for the rest of the year, meaning he would miss the Asian Champions League campaign and most of the next A-League season but the player himself was maintaining a positive outlook.

"I'm so disappointed," Thompson said.

"Last night was such a big game for the club and the supporters and this year was going to be such a big year with the AFC Champions League and World Cup to come.

"But I'm going to come back bigger and stronger.

"What doesn't kill you can only make you stronger."
