Melbourne Victory striker Archie Thompson is close to a call-up for the Australian national team. Socceroos boss Pim Verbeek will name his squad for next month's Asian Cup qualifier against Kuwait today and the A-League's all-time leading goalscorer is expected to be in the 23-man squad.
Thompson last played for Australia in February and March last year in two poor Asian Cup performances but the latest is that he is verging on being picked by Verbeek as one of potentially a handful of players from the A-League to make the trip to Kuwait City.
They are likely to be regulars Craig Moore (Brisbane Roar) and Jason Culina (Gold Coast United), World Cup hopefuls Alex Brosque (Sydney FC ), and Mile Sterjovski and Chris Coyne (Perth Glory) plus Roar youngster Tommy Oar who could be the bolter in Verbeek's roster.
Australia takes on Kuwait in Kuwait City on Wednesday January 6 2010.
