Melbourne to beat Sydney for crucial Australia World Cup qualifier

It appears that Melbourne has won the race to host what could be Australia's World Cup qualifying match.

The fixture against Japan is the last game of the Asian qualifying stage and although not scheduled until June 17 next year, it is a highly sought after game.

Football Federation Australia is believed to have agreed terms with the Victorian Government to host the match which has the enormous potential of an estimated $5 million in gate takings alone.

The Japan v Australia rivalry is gaining legs after the 2006 World Cup group match which saw the Socceroos come from 1-0 down to triumph 3-1 and the prospect of this particular fixture being a 'knock out' game of sorts is extremely tantalising for officials and fans alike.
