Meireles backs himself to cover for Liverpool captain Gerrard

Liverpool recruit Raul Meireles believes he is the man to cover for injured skipper Steven Gerrard.

The Portugal international has made 11 Premier League appearances since joining the Reds in the summer and after producing his best of those matches in the weekend's 3-0 win over West Ham United, is confident he can fill the void in the centre of the pitch in Gerrard's absence.

"I feel more comfortable playing in the middle, but I will play wherever the manager wants me to," he said. "That's my job and I'm working to be a successful player for Liverpool and to help the team.

"The Premier League is difficult and it has been difficult playing in England because all the teams you come up against are good.

"This is more competitive than Portugal, but I am feeling more comfortable. When you are winning, things are always better and all the players are helping me.

"We played some very good football against West Ham. We will continue to work hard and I hope my performances can keep improving."
