Megson pleads for fans to back Bolton

New Bolton Wanderers manager Gary Megson is pleading with fans to back the team today against Aston Villa.

Megson was greeted by jeers when he watched his first game as an observer but he wants the disgruntled fans to turn down the volume for the start of their survival fight against Aston Villa.

Megson fears that the bad feeling towards his appointment by chairman Phil Gartside could hinder the club's chances of staying up and pleaded: "It makes life easier if the reaction is really positive. Not just from my point of view but also the players.

"The supporters are not stupid, they know the position we're in, they will also know that a negative atmosphere will not help us get the results that they want. It will only help the opposition and not our own people.

"It's not about Gary Megson, Phil Gartside, Kevin Nolan or Gary Speed. It's about 'we' and we've got to move forward like that."
