McShane admits Sunderland axing hurt

Sunderland defender Paul McShane acknowledges that being dropped by manager Roy Keane has made him question and re-evaluate his game.

The Republic of Ireland defender was the scapegoat for the 7-1 defeat to Everton in November at Goodison Park, and Keane subsequently brought in Jonny Evans and Phil Bardsley from Manchester United in the January transfer window to replace McShane.

"Not playing shakes everybody. It is not a nice thing to sit on the sidelines and look in, when you want to play every week," he told the Irish Mail on Sunday. "That was not enjoyable, of course it wasn't. When you are left out, you try and see where the manager is coming from. The worst thing that you can do is worry about what you are doing. With me that meant training harder, so I did that day in and day out. You cannot control the uncontrollable.

"You react professionally. You cannot mope because the team is not only about you. It is a team game, and if you go about spitting your dummy out, it does not look so good in front of the other players.

"It has been an up and down season for me. I have learned a lot about myself, and about my game," he concluded.
