Sam McQueen admitted it was a great thrill to make his full debut for Southampton on Thursday night.
The 21-year-old replaced the injured Matt Targett at left-back for the Europa League clash with Inter Milan at the San Siro in what was his first start for the south coast club.
McQueen felt a sense of excitement in the lead up to the match but was ultimately let down as the Saint were beaten 1-0 on a night where they really should have come away with full points.
"To be named in the starting team was special and I was excited. Out there I enjoyed it and tried to do everything I could to help the team," he told the club's official website.
"Overall I'm disappointed is the main feeling, and I'm frustrated as nice as it is to be playing we should have won.
"We were the better team, dominated it and created chances which we've got to take."
He added: "I was very nervous before the game but some people say that helps you perform in the right way.
"I was trying to make myself feel comfortable, embrace the nerves if you like and do what I'm trained to do."
