McNamara chasing second spot with Dundee Utd

Dundee United manager Jackie McNamara is backing his side to push for a second-place finish in the Scottish Premiership this season.

The Tangerines currently sit fourth in Scotland’s top flight, six points behind Aberdeen and Motherwell, who are second and third respectively.

United take on champions Celtic in the final pre-split fixture this weekend before entering the final matches against the other top five sides in the championship group.

In that time, the Taysiders will meet both the Dons and the Steelmen at home and McNamara is hoping they can bridge the gap with the rivals as they seek second spot and a qualifying place in the Europa League for next season.

"I think it's still there for us," McNamara said. "It's obviously a big ask.

"Aberdeen and Motherwell are going very strongly, but obviously we've got a massive game for us against Celtic, so we'll go and do our best.

"We're chasing them at the moment and we have been for long spells in the season. Great credit to Motherwell and Aberdeen for the consistency they have shown over the season.

"But again Celtic have been so dominant this year in the league, so a hard game for us on Saturday, but it's one we look forward to."
