Departing FC Twente boss Steve McLaren has revealed his experience as manager of the England national team still haunts him.

The former Middlesbrough man was in charge of the Three Lions from May 2006 until December 2007 and during that time failed to lead the team to Euro 2008 qualification.

Since then, McLaren has copped plenty of criticism for his time in charge and admits his tenure is hard to look back on.

"Not a day goes by when I don't think about the England experience," he said. "I worked hard to get into that position. I did not take the opportunity and paid the consequences. It is something that spurs me on.

"It was a huge disappointment. I think it was a difficult appointment. I could not turn it down. I knew I could do it. But I think I lacked the experience to fulfill it to the potential I wanted to. I did not have the experience to deal with all the demands around the job. I can say that now."
