McInnes admits St Johnstone have retained their SPL status

Derek McInnes believes St Johnstone's historic 4-1 win over Rangers on Tuesday secured the club's Clydesdale Bank Premier League status for next season. The historic victory over the Ibrox men took the SPL new boys on to 38 points in seventh place with seven games remaining.

"There was no trophy handed over as there was when we beat Morton last season to secure promotion but that result against Rangers made us safe," he said.

"As much as the victory itself delighted Tony Docherty (assistant) and myself, it secured SPL football for us next season.

"We are not there yet and I might be tempting fate but in terms of the targets we set that was 'job done' for us.

"At the start of the season I never imagined that we would be on 38 points with seven games to go.

"Our next challenge is to get in to the top six.

"We have two games to go and chasing Hearts for that spot and we will see what happens.

"But it would be a disaster if Hearts didn't make it, there is no pressure on us."
