McInerney, Di Vaio expecting to form dangerous Montreal Impact duo

Montreal Impact fans saw a glimpse of a newly-formed attacking partnership on the weekend.

Montreal Impact fans saw a glimpse of a newly-formed attacking partnership on the weekend.

Veteran Italian striker Marco Di Vaio and new signing Jack McInerney, who was acquired from Philadelphia Union recently, combined for a first-half goal in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Chicago Fire.

The first 45 minutes between Di Vaio and McInerney looked promising but head coach Frank Klopas decided to move the latter to a left wing after the break in order to combat Chicago’s formation.

But that does not mean Di Vaio and McInerney can’t continue to work on their fledgling relationship as both players see the positives of feeding off each other.

“In these moments, for me and Jack, the team is more important,” said former Juventus and Bologan striker Di Vaio.

“Then, the combination between two players, that’s going to come during the year. What’s important for everyone, and for Jack as well, is finding the right combination for the team, being able to find something more solid.”

While McInerney added: “It’s only going to get better as the season goes along.

“In training, we’ve been playing together, and making that connection is, hopefully, going to lead to more goals.”

Di Vaio and McInerney could get to again build on their on-field partnership when the Impact head to reigning MLS Cup champions Sporting Kansas City this weekend.
