McClaren still to name Newcastle captain

Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren admits he is yet to make a decision on who will captain the team this season.

Argentine defender Fabricio Coloccini remains captain of the north east club but his form and fitness may not warrant a start in the coming weekend's 2015/16 Premier League season opener against Southampton.

The Magpies captaincy was handed around last season as the club was thrown into disarray with the threat of relegation and many names have been linked with the armband this summer.

Dutch defender Daryl Janmaat has been touted by many as the man to take the reins but McClaren revealed on the weekend that he is still to decide who will lead the side this term.

"You will find that out next week," said the United boss.

"It has been passed around all over the place."

When asked further if he had made a decision, McClaren added: "No.

"I am asked this before every game. They (senior players) should all be.

"We have a senior group and I have kind of passed it around that group."

On Coloccini, he added further: "Coloccini is the club captain but will he play next week?

"We don't know, so will he captain next week? We don't know.

"Let's get him on the training field first and get him playing to see if he can start next week."
