Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith has likened Everton midfielder James McCarthy to club great Paul Bracewell.
Of McCarthy's performance at Arsenal, Smith wrote in the Telegraph: "McCarthy's maturity, his understanding of the role, shone through as Everton moved through the gears.
"Lodged next to (Gareth) Barry, he protected the back four with a great deal of intelligence whenever Arsenal tried to get things going. Not only that, he showed a good range of passing in supporting attacks, content to play the simple ball when it was on. one superb curling cross, hit first time, displayed a quick mind as well as clean feet.
"Looking for comparisons, Everton folk of a certain age may see something of the Paul Bracewell in the new lad. An unsung hero who does so much for the team with his passing, tackling and all-round industry."
