McCarthy injury downgraded but still in doubt as Wigan prepare for Arsenal

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez has revealed that midfielder James McCarthy's ankle injury is not as bad as initially feared.

The 22-year old Republic of Ireland international was injured in a heavy challenge during the Latics' 2-1 defeat to Norwich City on the weekend but the problem has been downgraded to a sprained ankle after it was believed he had injured ligaments.

"We've had the scan and he has a sprain in his ankle, and we need to see how that develops," told the Wigan Evening Post.

"Any sort of injury is disappointing, although we are relieved that it is not a really bad tear to his ligament.

"He's been working really hard this past two days, accelerating the recovery process, but it's too early to tell if he'll be okay for the weekend."
