McCall on cloud nine as Motherwell close in on second

Motherwell boss Stuart McCall was over the moon after his side pulled off a 2-1 win over Inverness on Wednesday night.

The Steelmen secured their 21st victory of the campaign to move within one point of second-placed Aberdeen who they coincidentally play in the final match of the season this weekend.

An early penalty from John Sutton and a Gary Warren own-goal at Fir Park allowed the 'Well to outlast Caley who struck back ten minutes into the second half through Graeme Shinnie.

But it wasn't enough to deny McCall's men a second straight triumph which has them on the verge of finishing behind runaway champions Celtic on the standings.

"It's incredible. Twenty-one victories," said McCall.

"I said at the beginning of the season Celtic would win it, Hearts unfortunately because of the problems they had would be bottom, and Aberdeen would be second.

"That's because they've got such a good management team and a good squad of players. For us to be that near them is beyond what we could have dreamt of, but that's credit to the squad.

"Tonight wasn't the prettiest but we got the job done and we got that little bit of luck at the end. I think we have merited that over the season."
